The Truth I'd Tell an Overweight Friend Before I Died
Losing weight requires accepting that you must achieve your goals despite existing obstacles like a slow metabolism, injury, or lack of knowledge. Weight gain often happens because people eat future food ahead of time simply because they can (when they shouldn’t). To reverse this, you must realize that food won't fix emotional needs, stop waiting for perfect circumstances, and take full responsibility for your eating habits.
When I told my wife that I was going to do a video and blog pretending to be on my death bed, she said, "That’s a lot of pressure. I mean, really, you’re actually going to talk about what you’d say if you were dying?" and I said, "To the best I can."
So, imagine with me that I am dying and I have one final opportunity to share some wisdom to my overweight friend.
Three Things To Tell Your Overweight Friend
Above it all, put your trust in Jesus. Your good work and your good looks ain't going to get you there.
Love your husband or your wife (whichever one you have). If you do that well, everything else becomes so much better.
Food is one of the most wonderful, amazing gifts that God gives us. It’s something you’re going to get to enjoy a lot throughout your entire life. Learn to keep it as a good gift, not a prison.
Eating Ahead of Time
There’s going to be so many wonderful foods in your lifetime. But what happens if you’re not careful? You end up eating food that belongs to tomorrow, or next week, or next month. When you do that, it accumulates on your body like a bear packing on winter weight.
You can also look at it as eating both your food and someone else’s. Eventually, you have to give that food back. If you eat more than your body needs, you’ll carry more weight than you want.
If you’re already carrying that weight and have decided that it’s time to give it back, these effective weight loss hacks will help you flip your life upside-down.
The Obstacles in Your Way
It’s quite common to notice obstacles immediately after you decide to lose weight.
"Yes, I'm going to do it. I want to do it." But then you feel weak or even petrified as soon as the rubber meets the road. Accept now that you’re definitely going to have obstacles and decide that you are ready to embrace and face them. Otherwise, you’ll constantly have excuses to point to:
your slow metabolism.
a poor upbringing
not enough knowledge, or
an illness
Of course you’d prefer to avoid all of these, but that’s not how life goes..
You might try everything in your power to remove them, but in the end, you’ll likely be required to lose weight with at least one of those things in the way. That’s when you get to build a testimony to showcase how to do it right, regardless of the obstacles that stop so many others (including the old you).
If you only wait for the perfect circumstances to start taking care of your health, you’ll wait until you’re dead. Losing weight won’t fix all of your problems, just like eating food doesn’t fix your problems, but it will fix some of them, at the least! To some degree, your life will get better. And if it’s about a better life, it really doesn't make sense to sit around and wait.
Take Responsibility
Stop worrying about:
"How am I going to do it?”
“What’s the best way to do it?"
“How am I going to keep it up in the long-run?”
Instead, just take the bull by the horns and repeat: "I am going to do it. I am going to take responsibility for my actions and take real care of my body."
The body you want requires different behavior than the body you have. It starts with a simple choice to stop letting food rule you. You have to actively train your brain for weight loss instead of looking for an easy way out.
Once you take full responsibility, you’re going to be amazed at what begins to happen and how your life starts to change.
Train your brain. Transform your body.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have a medical condition or slow metabolism?
Do what you can medically, but don’t use it as an excuse. The rules of the 21-Day Weight Loss Transformation program still work, even with a slow metabolism.
Why is not eating after 7:30 p.m. effective for weight loss?
Because hunger isn’t an emergency, it’s just a feeling. Closing the kitchen creates a clear boundary and trains your brain to stop looking to food for comfort, relief, or entertainment at the end of the day.
