A Pastor Lost Over 80 Pounds With These 4 Weight Loss Mindset Shifts
Every once in a while, somebody in the weight loss program says something that sticks with me so deeply that I immediately think, “Everybody needs to hear this.”
This guy was one of those people.
He’s a pastor, and after working with me for a few months, he ended up losing over 80 pounds quicker than average. But what stood out even more than the weight loss was how insightful he was about the process.
Everything he was saying, I thought, man, this is it.
These are my four favorite things he shared during his transformation journey.
1. “I’ve Been Living by Accident With My Health”
The first thing he said was this:
“Joe, I live a life that’s very intentional with my family, with my prayer, with my church. It’s very intentional because if I live by accident, it’s just not a life well-lived.”
And then he said:
“Now I see that I’ve been doing that with my health. It has just been by accident. And I can’t do that.”
That was the first thing he said, and I thought, man, isn’t that true for so many people?
They’re intentional in every other area:
their work
their finances
their parenting
their faith
But with food and health, they’re just drifting. Eating whatever sounds good. Stopping for whatever is convenient. Hoping things somehow improve later. But health lived by accident usually creates consequences on purpose, and that realization changed things for him.
And honestly, it changes things for a lot of people once they finally see it.
2. “I Believe God Wants Me to Live a Lifestyle of Fasting”
The second thing he said really stuck with me, because in my program we have a mantra:
Embrace the Hunger
Sometimes you’re going to be hungry, but it’s best not to eat every time you feel hungry. Especially when you’re overweight. He said:
“Joe, I was praying, and I believe God impressed upon me that He wants me to live a lifestyle of fasting.”
When he said that, I thought, oh, isn’t that good?! Because aren’t we all called, in some ways, to live a lifestyle of fasting? I’m not always going to have everything I want. Some things I’m going to give back to God. Some things I’m going to do without. Some things I’m going to deny myself.
He said:
“I think I’m called to do that with food.”
And I thought, aren’t we all to some degree? If we really get that, I think it would help a lot of people that struggle with overeating. Because most of us treat every craving like an emergency. We feel hungry for twenty minutes and suddenly think something is wrong. But hunger is not an emergency.
Sometimes hunger is just part of changing. Sometimes hunger is where discipline gets built. And honestly, that mindset was really helpful to him.
I think it can help a lot of other people too.
3. “I’m Having as Much Fun as I Can With My Allotted Calories”
The third one was really practical.
He said:
“I’m having as much fun as I possibly can with my allotted amount of calories.”
And I love that, because let’s say your allotted calories were 1,200. Then you’re approaching the day with this mindset:
“I’m going to have as much fun as I can with these calories.”
That changes things, because now you’re realizing:
I can still enjoy food
I can still enjoy life
but I can’t just go wild
And that’s the problem for so many people. They want freedom without consequences. They want enjoyment without limits. But life doesn’t work like that.
You can have fun, but you can’t just go wild and expect no consequences from that. And honestly, once people stop fighting that reality, things start getting easier, because now they’re working with truth instead of against it.
4. “All I Have to Do Is Turn the Last 21 Days Into the Next 30 Years”
This last one might be my favorite.
After we finished the first 21-Day Transformation, he said:
“Joe, I see it. All I have to do is take the past 21 days and turn it into the next 30 years.”
He got it. He saw it. He realized this wasn’t about surviving some temporary diet.
He realized:
this is how you live
this is how you think
this is how transformation happens
We don’t just go on a diet and suddenly everything is fixed. We have to have a transformation. That’s what has to happen. The way we think about food changes. The way we eat changes. The way we think about exercise changes. Everything changes.
And honestly, that’s what people really want. Not another temporary plan. Not another restart. Not another Monday.
They want peace with food. They want consistency. They want freedom.
Why the 21-Day Transformation Works
One of the biggest reasons the 21-Day Transformation works is because it gives people enough time to finally see clearly. Not perfectly, but clearly.
People start realizing:
they can survive hunger
they don’t need constant snacks
structure actually brings relief
they feel better with less food noise
they’re capable of consistency
And then something shifts. They stop thinking:
“I need another diet.”
And they start thinking:
“I need to keep living this way.”
That’s a completely different mindset.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 21-Day Transformation?
The 21-Day Transformation is Trainer Joe’s structured weight loss program built around six non-negotiable rules focused on food, walking, water intake, accountability, and mindset transformation.
Why does Trainer Joe say “embrace the hunger”?
Because hunger is not an emergency. Learning to tolerate normal hunger helps break emotional eating patterns and builds discipline around food.
Is the 21-Day Transformation faith-based?
The program is informed by Joe’s Christian faith and encourages biblical principles like discipline, intentionality, gratitude, and self-control, but it remains both practical and approachable for all people.
Why do most diets fail?
Most diets fail because people temporarily restrict food without changing the mindset and habits that created the weight gain in the first place.
